Oneida County Ambulance Service
Location and Coverage Areas
Oneida County Ambulance Service provides emergency medical response to all unincorporated municipalities within Oneida County along with some outside areas of Vilas, Lincoln and Forest Counties. The City of Rhinelander provides emergency medical response within the city limits.
Oneida County has four staffed bases and one volunteer base. Staffed Ambulances are based at Rhinelander Aspirus Hospital, Howard Young Medical Center, Nokomis Fire Department and the Sugar Camp Ambulance Building. An additional volunteer ambulance is based at the Three Lakes Fire Department.
The map below demonstrates the location and coverage area of each ambulance.
Ambulance Response Structure
Each ambulance is assigned an Initial Response Area these areas are designated by color in the “Ambulance Coverage Area Map”. When the 911 Center receives a call for an ambulance, the ambulance dispatched is determined by the geographical location of the caller requesting the ambulance.
Roaming ambulances are used to backfill or provide a second ambulance while the first ambulance is responding to a call. When an ambulance located at Howard Young Medical Center is called out, the ambulance located in Nokomis will relocate and park near the northern portion of its Initial Response Area to be available in the event a second ambulance is needed in the area covered by Howard Young Medical Center based ambulance.
When an ambulance located at Howard Young Medical Center and the ambulance located at the Nokomis Fire Department are called out at the same time, the ambulance located at Rhinelander Aspirus Hospital will relocate and park near the middle portion of its “Initial Response Area” to be available in the event of a third ambulance is needed in the Nokomis or Howard Young Medical Center coverage area.
